The Washington Post later interviewed Khalifa, where she clarified that the controversial scene was meant to be satirical and that Hollywood films showcase Muslims in a negative late compared to any pornographic film director.

She went on to say that “Women’s rights in Lebanon are a long way from being taken seriously if a Lebanese American porn star that no longer resides there can cause such an uproar. What I once boasted to people as being the most Westernized nation in the Middle East, I now see as devastatingly archaic and oppressed.”

Shortly after the interview, searches for Khalifa on PornHub increased five-fold in a matter of 3 days, with a quarter of the searches coming from Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. As if being publicly disowned by her parents (and the general Arab world), Khalifa also received a steady flow of death threats online, including edited images of Khalifa being held captive and told that she will be “the first person in Hellfire”. Khalifa took this with much humour and responded “I’ve been meaning to get a little tan recently.”

In the same month, Khalifa signed a long-term contract with WGCZ Holding, which is the parent company of Bang Bros. WGCZ Holding owns the largest free porn site called XVideos.

In support of her decision for a new life, more than 1.5 million people signed a Change.org petition campaigning in Khalifa’s favour. Bang Bros replied by sending a cease and desist letter and went on to set up a website to dispute statements Khalifa had made about the company.
